With its prime location in the heart of the US, it is an ideal place to meet-up with bi-coastal friends.
The KC metro area is home to over 2 million people. The city itself is now larger than St. Louis. It boasts an international airport and professional sports teams.
Kansas City features high-end dining and shopping and plenty of fun diverse activities for couples, families, and or a girl’s weekend.
Kansas and Missouri
First things first. There is a Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. The northern part of the cities is separated by the Missouri River. An arbitrary longitude line separates the southern half.
The majority of “Kansas City activities” take place on the Missouri side. Arrowhead Stadium, home of the reigning Superbowl champs, is located in Missouri.
5 Things to Experience in KC this Weekend
Remember guys Kansas City is more than just BBQ!
The Fountains
Skip Europe and visit Kansas City.
This may come as a surprise, but Kansas City is home to more fountains than any other city in the US. The City of Fountains Foundation proudly declares that the area has over 200 public and private fountains. City of Fountains
The “City of Fountains” origins came out of necessity. The original fountains were designed to provide clean water for horses. Decorative fountains began appearing all over the city in the 1870s.
Second to Rome in fountains, Kansas City is also second to Paris boulevards. KC has 132 miles of boulevards.
Guys! You still with me? Remember stay focused keep saying, ” Kansas City is more than just BBQ.”
Power and Lights District
Imagine all of your favorite bars and restaurants connected by a giant outdoor courtyard. That’s the Power and Light District.
Located in downtown KC next to the Sprint Center, the courtyard offerings viewing parties for sporting events. Enjoy a glass of your favorite spirit or sample a local beer from Boulevard Brewing.
Insider tip: You can take your drinks to-go for the ultimate bar hopping experience.
WWI Museum and Liberty Memorial
Shortly after the end of WWI, Kansas City residents quickly raised funds to erect a memorial to honor the lives lost during the war. The equivalent of $35 million today was raised in 10 short days.
Expect to have chills as you enter the National WWI Museum and Memorial. Visitors travel a glass suspended bridge over a bed of poppies. The field consists of 9,000 poppies; each poppy representing 1,000 lives lost during the war. This is an amazing experience and if your only in KC once in your life a must see.
Congress designated this facility as the nation’s official World War I Museum in 2004.
Hold on guys we are still in the – Kansas City: is more than just BBQ mode.
The Roasterie
The Roasterie flagship factory location has an airplane on the roof of the building. You can’t miss it.
Sign-up for a 45-minute tour of the facility. Learn about the history of coffee while viewing the roasting, blending, and packaging processes. End the tour with a sample of their cold brew line.
My personal recommendation is to savor a cup of slow drip coffee and then grab some Betty’s Recipe to take home. This medium roast has cinnamon and hazelnut tones.
No visit to Kansas City would be complete without indulging in some BBQ.
See I guys I wasnt going to let it go with out coming full circle. Because for some of us Kansas City: is ALL about BBQ!
I don’t care you cant visit KC without picking up some BBQ. Typical Kansas City sauce is sweet and thick with a little bit of pepper.
Henry Perry, the original KC “barbecue king”, sold smoked-meat wrapped in newspaper. Perry trained Charlie Bryant beginning the legacy of Arthur Bryant’s. Around the same time, Gates Bar-B-Q opened.
Burnt ends can be found on most BBQ menus in Kansas City. The best burnt ends, in my humble opinion, are made at LC’s. LC’s BBQ is located in a former liquor store (the bars are still on the windows) with the large smoker instead the building. Their BBQ sauce is my favorite as well.
Ooh, I am now craving a spring-time visit to see the fountains and drive down tree-lined boulevards with the windows down. A glass of Boulevard Pale Ale sounds like the perfect companion to some burnt ends.
